Winter blues?

Well we are in full swing of the winter mode here in the Deep South. Thermals, electric blankets and warm fluffy hats and gloves. Along with an over-reliance on the heating systems in our offices, houses and cars to keep us warm.

And that's where it all went wrong, My heater had been playing up for a few months, it would go and then it didn't. I would beep the horn and it would start again, sometimes, but not always and then It just stopped. It didn't stop on a day where it would be OK to be without it, it waited until we had the hardest frost here in Southland. I jumped in the car and there was nothing. I had an over-reliance on it, to always be there for me.

Pleading with it did nothing, what was worse, there was also frost on the inside of the window....What!! I have to be at a presentation in ten minutes....

Anyway, it got me thinking about how little we are prepared for crisis mode in general. That morning I was reacting to my crisis. -1 degree in the car was making for a refreshing start to the day, but I also couldn't see where I was going.

A few minutes later, I made it to my presentation, albeit a little flustered, and the day finally ended on a high note.

However, as I said, it got me thinking about crisis mode. Is your business adequately prepared for a crisis. In general, NZ businesses are poorly prepared for crises management.

I have clients that process their wages and no one else knows anything relating to the wages payments. What happens if something happens to them? What are the risks to the business if this was to happen?

What happens when in-

house software systems crash or they have a virus attack?

There are lots of ways we can prepare ourselves for such events.

With payroll, we can store our payroll data in the cloud, rather on local servers. We can also have a backup person to process staff wages. It maybe an idea to outsource the payroll function. Which not only reduces privacy breaches, but also allows for multiple people to be responsible for getting the payroll processed on payday.

There are many things to think about when preparing for crisis mode, Payroll is simply one of them, but it's a reasonably important one.
